ABOUT

The AALM Trails Club was established in 2013 to resuscitate, protect and maintain historical and all trails in the Municipality of Ivry sur le Lac as a network for the enjoyment of its citizens. These trails are meant for hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Annual AALM membership payment as well as signing the Trails Club agreement is necessary for users to be a member of the Trails Club and to have access to the trail map.

The Trails Club agreement outlines responsible, respectful trail use and acknowledges the rights of the involved landowners.

The Trails Committee Chair is Joyce Arsenault.

OBJECTIVES

The club’s objective is to resuscitate and maintain the historically established cross-country skiing and hiking trails that pass through Ivry, such as the Laurentian Trail and the Maple Leaf Trail, created by Jackrabbit Johannsen in the 1930s and 1940s. It also works with many volunteers to expand the network of trails that exist in the hills and valleys of Lac Manitou. Many new trails with a total distance of over 50 kilometers have been cleared, marked and mapped, allowing cross country skiers, snowshoers and hikers to enjoy their sports year-round. These trails feature some of Ivry’s most beautiful promontories and pastoral vistas.

MANDATE

  • The mission is to conserve and protect the trails in a natural, minimally invasive state in Ivry sur le Lac and around Lake Manitou.

  • A trails club committee is established to coordinate activities year around such as group treks and trail monitoring and maintenance. The chair of the committee must be a AALM board member.

  • Maintain a trails map which is copyrighted, password protected and is available to current trails club members only.

  • Do maintenance of trails on an ongoing basis, including an annual autumn “trails clearing” day(s), by member volunteers.

  • Invite "Trails Clearing” day volunteers to a celebratory event to be held later that evening, ie a potluck supper.

  • Enlist member volunteers to be trail leaders or stewards for nearby network trails.

  • Identify trails with trail signage and other types of markers.

  • Monitor unauthorized use of private trails, copyrighted network trail map and take action to correct any misuse.

One of our annual winter events is the January trek from the neighbouring community of Valdurn to Lac Manitou. The largest annual event is the community wide autumn Trail Clearing Day followed by the popular potluck dinner which attracts 60-80 residents.

TRAILS CLUB ACHIEVEMENTS

Since its inception, the Ivry Trails Club has successfully reopened the historic Jackrabbit Johannsen Trail and created a network of more than 20 trails around Lac Manitou and its surrounding lakes. Such achievements were made possible with the support from over 100 members, as well as significant support from private Ivry landowners, from Conservation Manitou (the largest charitable land conservancy in the Laurentians), from the Municipality of Ivry-Sur-Le-Lac and from the AALM itself.
